The Only Thing Constant is Change – Are You Ready?
Perhaps you’ve heard the expression that the only thing constant is change. We have all had to change our plans to respond to the changes in our situations. That’s really the point about change – because everything is changing, we need to adapt.
In fact, we’d better adapt and change ourselves along with all the changes in the world around us, because if we don’t we’ll be left behind.
Here’s an exercise I do with my clients regarding change. Take your age and subtract it from 100. So if you’re 40 years old, the answer is 60. Now, subtract that many years from today’s date. If it’s 2009, then 60 years ago is 1949. Compare that year to today – that is the magnitude of change you can expect to see during your lifetime.
Compare travel, technology, communication, etc. Who were the largest businesses and industries then versus now? What about how you were likely to spend your work day and your free time? Get the picture?
This is the magnitude of change that will happen around us before we depart this earth. We need to be ready for this change to come. We don’t even know what will be in place in 10 years, so it’s very difficult to know exactly what we’ll be doing, or what we want down the road.
Because our environments and our world are changing, we need to be flexible and adaptable to keep up with the changes.
To help us become ready, engage in life-long learning. Learning doesn’t stop the day we graduate and end our formal school adventure. It continues each and every day as we are exposed to new situations.
How conscious are you in your efforts to learn? How much time do you spend developing yourself versus working on your business or your job? If you consistently spend time reading, listening to expert interviews, and attending seminars, then you should be just fine adapting to new situations as they come up.
